Gölcztalbrücke Viaduct - the tallest brick viaduct on the planet

The Gölchtalbrückke Viaduct, located in Germany, is the highest brick viaduct of all that exists on our planet. And if we take into account that such structures are no longer being built of bricks in our time, then we can safely say that this record will never be broken.

Viaducts have been known since the time of the Roman Empire, and a wide variety of materials were used for their construction. At first it was stone blocks fastened with mortar, then they were replaced by brick and concrete, but modern viaducts are built of steel and concrete using modern technologies.

Despite the fact that the Gölcztalbrückke viaduct will soon celebrate its 170th anniversary, it continues to regularly perform its main function - to ensure the operation of the railway connecting Dresden and Nuremberg. The viaduct is located 4 kilometers west of the city of Nechkau, in Saxony.

This 78-meter-high brick viaduct consists of 4 floors and was commissioned in 1851. It crosses the Gölcz River Valley and has a length of 574 meters. Despite its purely practical function, the Gölcztalbrückke viaduct is not without architectural grace and fits very harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. For its uniqueness, this building was included in the list of historical monuments in Germany, which are of particular value in terms of engineering and architecture.
