Not only a symbol of the country and a restaurant: what are Kuwait’s towers really for?

The famous towers in the capital of Kuwait are a symbol of the country and the personification of its image abroad. Located on the shores of the Persian Gulf, these objects adorn the national banknote, and thousands of tourists annually visit a delightful rotating spherical restaurant on top of one of the towers. But it turns out that the fantastic lighting, a gorgeous view of Kuwait and a tourist attraction - all this is secondary. In fact, the towers of Kuwait are technical facilities that play an important role in the life of the city.

Kuwait's towers are no longer young, especially when compared to most of the enchanting buildings in the Middle East. The grand opening of these facilities took place more than 40 years ago, in 1977. These technical facilities were erected for a stable water supply of the city. Yes, the famous towers of Kuwait are nothing more than water towers made in the original style, which, like 40 years ago, regularly perform their function. These two towers maintain the necessary pressure in the water supply system of Kuwait - the capital of Kuwait.

Interestingly, an international team took part in the creation of the famous towers of Kuwait. The architects were San Lindstrom and Malene Björn, and the construction company from Yugoslavia was directly involved in the construction of the facility. The final version of such an iconic facility for the city was personally approved by the emir of Kuwait.

The central water tower, in the upper part of which there is just an observation deck and a restaurant, has a height of 187 meters. Inside the lower ball is a water tank (4.5 thousand cubic meters in volume). The second tower is slightly smaller, its height is 147 meters, and it is also designed to store water supplies. Well, the third satellite tower does not play a direct role in the city’s water supply, but serves to power and effectively illuminate two neighboring towers.

All three towers are made of reinforced concrete, and spherical elements are decorated with steel disks of gray-blue shades that sparkle and shimmer in the sun. According to the architect, the appearance of the balls should be associated with the domes of the mosque.

We should also mention the restaurant, which can accommodate up to 90 visitors at a time. Its windows, located at a height of 123 meters, offer stunning views of Kuwait and the Persian Gulf. In order to prevent visitors from bored with a view from the window during a long meal, the platform on which the restaurant is located rotates smoothly. Sitting at the table, you will complete a full turn and return to the starting point in 30 minutes.
