Photos taken by a shy student in New York 80s

As a student at New York University in the 1980s, Robert Herman felt abandoned and lonely. Of course, he was not the first and not the last such young man in this metropolis. New York with its throbbing, crowded streets and overwhelming, huge mass of "concrete" is notorious for immersing new arrivals in complete isolation for some time.

To adapt to an unusual environment, a young student-filmmaker took a camera and went to wander around the city. He shot street life scenes to find a way out of his creativity. In addition, the camera served as a buffer for him to interact with the city.

"I felt like a very vulnerable personHerman recalled later in 2013. - Photography was an intermediary between me and the world. I tried to find peace by wandering around the city. ".

"Soho, Tribeca, East and West Village in the early 80s were great places to shoot."- says the photographer. - The buildings were low, so direct sunlight fell on the streets. My inspiration for creating street photography always starts with color and light. ".
