19th century women banners promoting products on their dresses

The fact that advertising is the engine of trade is now known to everyone. However, you cannot even imagine how long this truth has been revealed to the world. In each historical era in each country, there were different ways of advertising. Today we will tell you about the once-existing American women-banners, "banner lady", promoting products using their dresses. These ladies walked the streets in dresses hung with advertised items: spoons, light bulbs, jewelry, tools, pastries, sweets. They clearly showed their products to passers-by. This method really worked and made a profit.

Such an unusual method of advertising appeared in the USA in the 1870-90s. Women were specially hired to attract potential buyers and put on them dresses, "billboards." Despite the fact that the ladies looked like Christmas trees and looked somewhat ridiculous, there were many clients. People with pleasure and curiosity examined women in original outfits, and then went to the shops or candy stores advertised by them.

As a rule, actresses or ladies of easy virtue agreed to work as live street “banners”. Over time, savvy merchants went further and, in addition to organizing "parades," began to make postcards with girls banners and give them to customers.
