Brocken ghost: who can be seen walking with a backpack in the mountains

Climbers and other lovers of hiking in the mountains sometimes become witnesses to an unusual and slightly eerie phenomenon. During the fog, at the foot of the ridge or at the bottom of the valley, a silhouette of a person appears in front of the eyes of travelers, over whose head a rainbow semicircle glows, while the silhouette can even move. Sometimes it is possible to observe several foggy ghosts at once, which often causes genuine horror among travelers. In fact, this is a rather harmless optical phenomenon, which was called the "Broken ghost."

The ghost owes its name to Mount Brocken in Germany, where this phenomenon was observed quite often. You can see a brocken ghost during fog or against a background of clouds, if the observer is above the level of clouds, at the top of the ridge, or even in the cabin. The ghost itself is nothing but the shadow of the beholder, which appears when the sun shines from behind.

Strictly speaking, the Brocken ghost is a special case of gloria - colored rings of light that appear on the surface of fog as a result of diffraction of light. But what the researchers of this phenomenon say about the Broken ghost.
