The impregnable fort of Janjira in India

Despite the fact that India has never been a great sea power, its shores also have their forts, which are in no way inferior to European defensive structures. One of such legendary forts is Janjira, which, in addition to outstanding architecture, has a rich history.

Fort Janjira is less than a kilometer from the city of Rajapuri (also commonly used Rajaperi), which is located on the shores of the Arabian Sea, in the west of India, south of the city of Murud.

Inside the fortress was everything necessary to withstand a long siege. Today, most of the buildings are in ruins, but towers, three huge cannons, two artificial pools for collecting rainwater are still preserved here, trees grow and there is even a freshwater well.

All attempts to storm a well-fortified fort ended in failure. The Portuguese, British and Marathi tried to capture it, but the fort of Janjira for many years became a reliable stronghold of the Mughal empire. Only in 1736 the fort was taken by the rulers of the Maratha.

Even today, when the fort is uninhabited and slowly declining, it amazes with its grandeur and impregnability. The cities of Murud and Rajaperi are popular tourist centers from which they organize the delivery of tourists to the ancient fort.
