12 examples of how the streets of Berlin are struggling with the image of a swastika

Like the pacifists of the 60s who put flowers in the barrel of their arms, some people know that the best way to combat hatred is through love, beauty, and creativity.

One such person is For Omari. He recently launched Paintback, a campaign to turn hate symbols and slogans on the streets of Berlin into something fun and artistic. The Paintback concept involves hiding swastikas on the streets of the city, as far-right communities in Germany are increasingly beginning to show signs of increased activity.

Using simple images and templates, the graffiti makers involved in the Paintback project hope to inspire other cities to respond to ugly hate speech as well, turning them into something beautiful. With the help of a short video distributed on social networks and quickly becoming viral in Germany, the campaign came to life in other cities of the country and even beyond its borders. In networks, artists began to actively share their own transformations of the swastika under the hashtag #Paintback.
