Trebinje

I went out for breakfast in the morning and met her. She sat with her two daughters and calmly drank her morning coffee. Beautiful to the impossible. Static. World famous, but so natural. Guess who we are talking about? Of course, about Monica Bellucci. Thanks to the Serbian director Emir Kusturica, Monica stayed in this small town with a population of hardly more than 30 thousand people for several seasons in a row. She starred in Emir’s Milky Way, which recently appeared on the screens. Ah, yes, if you want to first understand what Herzegovina is and in particular the city of Trebinje - watch a movie, fall in love with these places in advance.

Yes, this was not my first visit to the city, but this is definitely one of the most memorable events. I could never have thought that in such a small place in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina I would meet a world-class star. I think at least Monica fans I was interested in. Friends! Go to Trebin, get acquainted with the place where you want to return again and again (and not only because of the opportunity to meet the beautiful Italian at the next table).

How to get there

I’ll tell you a little secret - most of the tourists who suddenly come to the city of Trebin find themselves there by accident. Most often, they relax at resorts in neighboring countries (Montenegro or Croatia) and, having bought a ticket for a guided tour of Bosnia and Herzegovina (which, incidentally, costs about 50 EUR), they get to Trebinje. Yes, that’s the easiest way. But if you do not want to depend on other people, you want to slowly, slowly, enjoy the city or even spend several days in it, then this option is clearly not for you.

You can independently get from Moscow or St. Petersburg to Trebin in three ways, each of which is quite exhausting, because Trebinje is not a popular favorite vacation spot for Russians. So, choose: plane, bus or your own car. In the first two cases, unfortunately, everything is not easy: you have to combine several types of transport.

By plane

For many years, there have been rumors in Trebin that the construction of an airport in the city is about to begin, but, as you know, so far this remains exclusively in plans, which, of course, greatly complicates the task for tourists to get here.

How do you get from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Trebinje? You have 3 options, which include flying on an airplane. Do not be surprised that they all include a visit to another country.

  1. Arrival in Dubrovnik (Croatia). Direct flights S7 fly from Moscow there, but only during the season (from May to September). Tickets cost differently, depending on the time of year, but mostly around 320 EUR. From Dubrovnik, you either rent a car or take a taxi to Trebin. Travel time is about 40 minutes. This is the easiest option, and possibly the cheapest. However, for this route you will need a valid Schengen.
  2. Arrival in Tivat. Flights Moscow-Tivat are made daily by such airlines as Aeroflot, S7, Ural Airlines, Montenegro airlines. Tickets cost from 240 to 650 EUR (in August and on holidays the most expensive). From there, also by rented car or taxi to Trebinje. The cost is about 70 EUR.
  3. Arrival in the city of Podgorica. The same airlines that fly to Tivat. The price is the same. However, you can get from Podgorica to Trebin by bus, which oversees this route daily.

By train

Once upon a time, many years ago, a railway station existed in this city. Unfortunately, he is not here right now. So, there is no way to get here by direct train from Moscow. However, if you still can not imagine your trip without long trips by rail, then you have one very exhausting option.

You can buy tickets for the train Moscow - Belgrade (more about this can be found here), and already from Belgrade by bus to get to Trebinje. Travel time is approximately 10 hours. The cost of such a ticket is about 25 EUR one way.

By bus

There are no buses that would go directly from Russia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (in particular, from Moscow to Trebin). But, as I mentioned, you can take a bus to the city from Belgrade, Sarajevo, Podgorica and even from the spa town of Budva.

Ask for tickets at the box office at the main bus stations, because often the city of Trebinje is not mentioned in the schedule, as it may not be the final stop of the route.

By car

If you are an avid car enthusiast and can not imagine traveling without your car, load your luggage and hit the road. But be prepared to spend 2-2.5 days traveling around Europe. Read more about how to get to the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, by car, you can read here. And from Sarajevo along the M18 and M20 highways in about 4 hours you can easily reach Trebinje.

When is the season? When is the best time to go?

Trebinje is such a peculiar resort city, but without the sea. What does it mean? In the hot summer months there are a lot of tourists coming for a couple of days from neighboring countries. But this does not mean that the rest of the year in Trebin you will see only empty deserted streets. Not at all. However, there are no crowds of people walking along them either. This is due not only to the influx of tourists. Local youths study at universities that are located in other cities of the country or even in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, therefore, at certain times of the year (summer months, September and January), all students come home for holidays. It is then that the city comes to life.

As for prices, I can’t say that they differ depending on the month. But you should not expect that you will find fresh strawberries on the market in January. Although this is a southern country, such products can only be bought in season.

Trebinje is a city that is always beautiful, therefore, if suddenly you are nearby during the off-season, let this not bother you. Get in the car and come here.

Trebin in the summer

Summer is the best time of the year to spend your holidays in this beautiful city. In June, thermometers show about + 25 ° C, which, in my opinion, is ideal weather. You can walk from morning to evening without dying from the heat. At the same time, you will be able to swim in the river, but be prepared for the fact that the water has not yet completely warmed up. If you prefer swimming in a warm river, come here in July-August. It is hot, yes (+ 30-35 ° C), but thanks to the constant wind, it is not difficult to transfer such heat.

Trebin in the fall

Autumn is a good time to travel to Trebin, but beware of the rains. Unlike, for example, Moscow autumn, here you can often see endless showers that completely paralyze the city. It is impossible to walk in such weather, the wind turns the umbrellas out, and you can’t sit on the verandas either. Local in such weather usually sit at home. But, despite the rain, the street is much warmer than in Moscow. Citizens don jackets no earlier than October, and boots no earlier than November. Therefore, feel free to take with you the clothes that you wear at home in August and September.

Trebin in the spring

In the spring, you can enjoy warm, but not exhaustingly hot weather all day long and walk from morning to evening. Everything blooms, people crawl out of their homes. In March and the beginning of April it is still cool, but then the temperature rises right up to + 25 ° С. Some daredevils swim in the Trebisnice River in May. In principle, if you are a supporter of swimming in the ice hole, then this will seem like child's play to you.

Another advantage of traveling here in the spring is the lack of an influx of tourists. However, finding a place on the veranda of the city’s most popular cafe will still be difficult.

Trebin in winter

I believe that in winter you need to go traveling either to the mountains, where you can do winter sports, or to warm countries. In Trebin, it may not be −20 ° C in winter, but even at −5 ° C you will freeze due to strong winds. Moreover, if you suddenly rent apartments, and do not live in a hotel, get ready that there will be only one small heater (and you will not find it in the bathroom). Due to the lack of heating in the houses it is very cold. It turns out that winter here is far from the most comfortable for relaxation.

Areas. Where is better to live?

Trebinje is a very small city. So small that if you settle in the most remote area, you can walk from there to the center on foot in 20 minutes. Therefore, it doesn’t matter exactly where you will live - in any case, everything will be very close.

Since the city is tiny, there are not many hotels here - only 7. Most of them are located in the center. In other areas there are mainly different apartments. The only advantage of living outside the center, in my opinion, is the availability of parking, which is difficult to find near hotels. Although some hotels have private parking.

The cost of one night in the hotel ranges from 40-45 EUR, in apartments, regardless of the area, it will be 20-25 EUR for two.

What are the main parts of the city, where is the best place to live?

  1. Center. There are all the main attractions and major hotels. You can get around the central area in half an hour at a time (though you will constantly stop to take pictures of the places you like).
  2. Zasad District. Very close to the center. The only negative is the lack of a normal sidewalk along the main road leading to the apartments located there. And so the area is calm, clean and green.
  3. Hrupjela District. It is located on a mountain, so if you can’t imagine your life without physical exertion, this area is definitely for you! A slender figure after a vacation, despite a large amount of food, is definitely provided for you.
  4. Tina District. It is located near the promenade, where it is very nice to walk both in the afternoon and in the evenings.
  5. District Bregovi (Bregovi). It is located almost in the center - only 5 minutes walk from it. There are no hotels here, but the apartments can be found, but after asking the locals. Unfortunately, I still have not been able to book an apartment in this area via the Internet.

What are the prices for vacation?

You will be pleasantly surprised when you arrive in Trebin. Here you can enjoy life for a week, having 100 euros in your pocket. No, of course, it all depends on your preferences, but in general in Trebin, as in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is very cheap.

You can dine for 5 EUR, the cost of a taxi is about 3 EUR in the city. Drink coffee in the morning in the city center - about 1 EUR.

The main attractions. What to watch

I am almost sure that 99% of Russians answer the question: “What is it necessary to visit in Trebin?” they will answer "I don’t know, I have never heard anything about this city and its attractions." Indeed, neither the Louvre nor the Reichstag is here. But this city has a soul: no matter what you see, wherever you are, whenever you come here, you will really like it here. Take a walk, look at churches and architecture, have a bite to eat in authentic cafes and enjoy the weather, which is almost never terrible here.

You need, however, to remember that there is a kind of siesta here. Shops, cafes and government offices operate from 8 (sometimes from 9) in the morning until 13-14: 00, they close, and then reopen only at 16-17: 00. During this break, it is better to relax in your room.

Top 3

  1. Hercegovacka gracanica. A magical observation deck with one of the most beautiful churches in the city (more details below).
  2. Stari grad. Old, untouched by the hand of a modern man city. A lot of cafes, a lot of people. The atmosphere is wonderful.
  3. Vinarija vukoje. I love the observation deck. This restaurant also offers great views of the city, but on the other side. The food is delicious. You can visit the wine cellar.

Beaches. Which are better

As you know, the city of Trebinje has no access to the sea, but the sea air is clearly felt here. How is this possible? Already 2 well-known resorts are half an hour from Trebinje. These are two countries: Croatia and Montenegro.

  1. Dubrovnik and the beaches adjacent to it. (about 30 km)
  2. Herceg Novi and the beaches adjacent to it. (about 45 km)

You may ask where to go? It is up to you: in both places it is very cool. In Montenegro, however, the beaches in this place will be more crowded.

Churches and temples. Which are worth a visit

There are enough churches and temples in the city, but I would highlight 3 that you should definitely visit. However, remember that you need suitable clothes - no bare shoulders and short skirts. By the way, unlike Russian churches, women here do not have to have a hat to go inside.

  1. Hercegovacka Gracanica - The temple, which is located on the mountain of Tsrkvin and offers stunning views of the whole city. In addition to the temple, there is a park and a cafe-restaurant. So give at least a couple of hours to travel here.
  2. Manastir Tvrdos (Tvrdos Monastery). It is located 5 km drive from Trebinje. It is also surrounded by a park where you can take a walk and enjoy the coolness in the shade of trees on a hot summer day.
  3. Saborna crkva Preobraženja Gospodnjeg (Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord) - A small, but very beautiful church inside, which has a mural depicting Nikola Tesla. Quite unusual for a church, isn't it?

Museums Which are worth a visit

The city is so small that there is only one museum - Muzej Hercegovine Trebinje (Herzegovina Museum Trebinje). If you are interested in history, and you want to find out how they lived in these parts in antiquity, then be sure to come here. However, I would not call this museum the best in the world and a must to visit.

Working hours depends on the season:

  • from May to October - 8: 00-18: 00,
  • from November to April - 8: 00-14: 00.

Moreover, the museum is open daily, unlike many others, which are usually closed on Mondays. The entrance is free.

Parks

There is only one place in the city that can be called a park - Ducicev park (Duchichev park). It is located in the very center of the city. The park as a whole is small but very cozy, but you are unlikely to have picnics there. There are several shops in the shade where you can spend some time when the heat is exhausting. But in general, do not hope that you will find yourself in a kind of Gorky Park - the scale is much smaller.

Tourist streets

It’s hard for me to single out a street in Trebin and call it a tourist - this simply does not exist. Tourists walk in the same place as all the locals, namely throughout the city. The most favorite route: to start the path from the tunnel leading to the old city, go through it to the bridge, go to the other side of the river, go along it and return to another bridge. It sounds very confusing, but if you follow the locals, you will immediately see that such a path takes 10-15 minutes, and you have already bypassed almost the entire city.

What to see in 1 day

  • 9:00 - wake up.
  • 10:00 - Breakfast in the shade of trees in the most famous cafe of the city - Hotel Platani.
  • 11:00 - go for a walk: visit the Old Town and the park.
  • 12:00 - go to the monastery of Tvrdosh.
  • 14:00 - buy burek (burek - meat pie) for lunch. Yes, fast food, but on vacation in Trebin, you can afford it.
  • 14:30-17:00 - relaxation in the room.
  • 17:30 - go to the mountain of Tsrkvin, from where a stunning view of the city of Trebin opens. Meet the sunset there and take wonderful photos.
  • 20:00 - Dine at Restoran MG.
  • 22:00 - head to the bar if you want to dance or sleep at home.

What to see in the surroundings

  1. Water mills on the river Trebishnitsa. Located literally 1-2 km. from the city.A very interesting sight for those who have not seen anything like this in their lives. Many even swim or fish there.
  2. Lastva (Lastva). The local resort on Lake Lastvansko, located 12 km. from the city of Trebinje. If you like to go fishing or just spend a day in nature - be sure to get out here for a few hours.
  3. Vinarija andjelic - a winery where you can taste local wines. You have the opportunity to visit a real wine cellar and, most likely, get out of there tipsy!

Food. What to try

As in all cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Trebin you can try national dishes (read about them here). But what to enjoy here?

  1. Honey. Many villagers live on the money raised from the sale of honey. He is really special here. So much so that I know people who went home with 10 kg. honey! Try it and you will understand why it is so loved here.
  2. Sir škripavac (Shkripavats cheese) - A local cheese that literally creaks under your teeth, which is why it got such a name, which is translated from Serbian as "creaky cheese." Very tender, usually unsalted and very tasty.
  3. Pecenje (liver) - lamb meat on a spit. Salty enough, with a crispy crust. It is worth a try, because it is in these parts of the lamb that has an unusual taste.

In general, in almost all restaurants in Trebin, food is tasty and inexpensive, so choose the interior you like and go there for dinner. Dishes often bring in huge portions of everything, so it would be nice to share them with someone. Do not make mistakes - do not order so much at once.

If you like to cook yourself, no problem. There are a lot of grocery stores, both small and large. Products are all fresh and relatively inexpensive.

Recommended Places

My favorite cafe in Trebin, where I drop in every time, regardless of the circumstances: winter or summer, I'm on the right diet or eat anything, with my girlfriend or my mother - you must go there! It is called Cafe-pizzeria grk and is located in the old town. Why is it so interesting? They make the most delicious ice cream desserts in the world, which in the Serbian language are called one word kup. There are a huge number of them on the menu: with chocolate or meringue, with fruit or caramel, 3 balls of ice cream or just 1. You will definitely find something that will make you come back here again and again.

Holidays

What interesting local holidays can you witness when you come to Trebin?

  1. Republika Srpska Day - January 9. Only in 2017, this day became an official holiday, it is celebrated throughout the Republika Srpska - one of the 2 parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. How to celebrate? Locals travel with the flags of the Republic in cars and ride around the city. It's funny to watch how a small city literally bursts at the seams from a huge number of cars and people watching this action.
  2. Slava (Glory) - August 19 - the day of the city, tied to the day of the saint, who is the patron saint of Trebinje. On this day, a church liturgy and a procession are held throughout the city, and then some local celebrity gives an amazing concert in honor of the holiday. Probably, then almost all residents are trying to get out of their cozy houses in the city center.

Security. What to watch out for

I have never met in my life another such city where I would be comfortable walking along empty streets at 2 a.m. and not be afraid of anything. Since the locals are still not spoiled by the excessive attention of tourists, they are not trying to deceive everyone who came here to relax, as is done in many cities and countries. Rather, the opposite. You will always come to the rescue, even if you do not ask for it.

Things to do

Of course, you can come to Trebin and spend 5 days sunbathing by the pool or having picnics in a local park. But my advice to you is to diversify your vacation as much as possible. Go to clubs and bars, feel them, as the local youth does, swim in the river and ride a canoe. Read more about all these activities below!

Shopping & Stores

Can't imagine your trip without shopping? Do you really need to buy at least something from clothes and shoes? Alas, I will have to disappoint you. There are very few stores in Trebin, and in those that are, the quality of the clothes leaves much to be desired. You are lucky only if you want to update your sports wardrobe - there are relatively many shops with sportswear, and there the range is good.

As such, there are no local brands in the city, but there are small boutiques offering clothes of unknown brands. In general, it is cheap, but in order to find something worthwhile, you have to look a long time.

  1. There are no large malls in the city. There is a trading house Market 99which, to be honest, is hard to call one. There are only 3 boutiques, 1 cosmetic store, a large supermarket and cafe.
  2. You can go to Bingo which houses a hypermarket, cafe, sports shop and one clothing store.
  3. There are also Modna kuca vumi (Fashion House Wumi). Here you will find several Serbian brands under one roof, however this also cannot be compared with a shopping center in our, Moscow, understanding.

Honestly, my advice to you is - do not waste time shopping in Trebin - you will hardly buy anything there anyway.

Bars Where to go

In the city there are only 2 bars that operate at any time of the year, namely Galerija and Iva. They are next to each other and, in general, have one DJ for two. What is most remarkable, these bars are located on the banks of the river - it’s very funny to dance on the extension, which begins to move along with the crowd trying to catch the rhythm. Both bars are open until one o'clock, up to a maximum of 2 a.m., after which everyone moves to the club. On Fridays and Saturdays, it includes hits by local stars and very few well-known songs in English.

Another bar is open in summer - White Bar. It is located in the Old Town in the open air. It is here that local singers organize concerts and entertain the audience. If you find a good table, then you will have a wonderful view of the bar and the city from the height of the second floor.

Clubs and nightlife

You will be surprised to know that there is only one nightclub in the city - Merlot. Once upon a time there was another institution that was known under the simple name Diskoteka, but, alas, it has long been closed.

There is no face control in the Merlot club, that is, security is, of course, present, but they let everyone in, no matter what you wear. But my advice is to dress up. Local love it.

This is the only place where you can spend the whole night stopping your shoes, however, not everyone will like music. Until 12 o'clock, they play mostly world hits, and then the DJ starts songs of local artists. Of course, if you do not speak Serbian and do not listen to Serbian music, you are unlikely to enjoy such a pastime.

Admission to the club is free. It can be paid only if there is a concert of some artist from the countries of the former Yugoslavia, but I personally have never come across live performances in this club.

It’s worth going here only on Friday or Saturday evenings. On other days, the club is either closed or there is no one there. However, these two days there are so crowded that you have to push around to leave the institution. Be prepared for the fact that there is very, very stuffy, so dress as easy as possible.

Prices here do not differ from the average for the city. Everything is very cheap, especially if you drink only 1-2 drinks per night - it will cost you about 4-5 EUR.

Extreme sports

It would seem that someone in such a small city will engage in extreme sports and generally develop this area, because it is unlikely to be profitable. However, it turns out, and here you can get new impressions.

  1. You can canoeing on the river Trebisnice. The descent lasts about 2 hours. By the way, there should be 2 people in each canoe, so split up in pairs in advance. In the tourist information center you will be given the contacts of an instructor who will help you with the organization of this entertainment.
  2. Take care diving (diving club "Poseidon"). Equipment and instructor services cost 50 EUR. Of course, you will not see anything like the living creatures of the Red Sea, but it's worth a try. It is better to dive in the summer due to the low temperature of the water in the river. In principle, beginners will completely master this sport, since you don’t have to dive deeply.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

Of course, you can bring national souvenirs from Bosnia and Herzegovina (which you can read about here) from Trebinje. But if you want something special that will remind you of this tiny, but such soulful city, then here are some ideas for a gift:

  1. Rastan - cabbage, which is considered the hallmark of the city. Soup is made from it, dolma is made. You can buy it on the market (it costs the same as regular lettuce leaves). And it is better to immediately find out the recipe for dishes with rashtan from the locals - you will really like it.
  2. Honey. Yes, this is a national product. But it is here, in this small city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, that the best honey in the country is. Local beekeepers regularly participate in exhibitions, and in the summer on the main promenade "honey days" are organized, when everyone puts their products on display and for sale.
  3. Cheese. It offers different types of cheeses: both hard and soft. There is even "cheese in oil" - a special delicacy. It’s definitely worth a try.

How to get around the city

Trebinje is a tiny city, especially when compared with cities such as Moscow, New York, Paris or, for example, Tokyo. In just a few hours, you can get around it up and down. Here you will not find the metro and urban land transport. There are no sightseeing tourist buses in the city, and more than half of the population travels exclusively on foot: in fact, in order to get from point A to point B, you hardly need more than 15 minutes.

The only transport you can use, tired of long walks, is a taxi or a rented car.

Taxi. What features exist

In the city there is only one taxi network, in which you will not find a site, nor even an application in the Apple store. How then to ride? All drivers are in the city center in front of the entrance to the Old City (it is pedestrian, with some exceptions). This is where you can get in the car and drive to your destination. I advise you to immediately ask the phone number of your driver, maybe he will even give you a business card. Unfortunately, there is no single taxi service number.

No taxi counters exist either. Trips within the city are cheap - around 3 EUR. If you want to take a taxi to another city, then you have to pay a fairly large amount. By the way, you can’t pay with a credit card - only in cash.

Depending on which airport you fly to (Dubrovnik, Tivat or Podgorica), you will have to pay 30-50 EUR for a one-way trip.

Vehicle rental

Of course, it is possible to rent a car here, but be prepared for the fact that the choice of cars is modest, and almost all of them have a manual gearbox. This can be a big obstacle if you are not only accustomed to the automatic transmission, but have never traveled through the mountains.

There are no international companies, there are only 1-2 local ones. In order to rent a car, you will need a passport, a driver’s license (according to the law, an international VU is not necessary, but I advise you to get one just in case). Your driving experience must be at least 2 years, the age of the driver does not matter. You can try offers and compare prices here.

It is not possible to rent a moped or scooter, only a car. Gasoline is expensive compared to Russia (as elsewhere in Europe). Cost - about 1 EUR per liter.

Tips for motorists

As I said, the city is very small, but this does not mean that you can finally enjoy the trips behind the wheel of a car. On the contrary, you are likely to feel stress that cannot be compared with the emotions of driving in Moscow. Here, many violate the rules, many drive very sloppy. The streets are quite narrow, so if you suddenly arrive in a large jeep, you will definitely regret it. There are parking lots in the city, but it’s very difficult to find a place (especially if you want to leave the car in the city center and not go anywhere on foot).

My advice to motorists is to walk! Trebine is not Moscow, here from anywhere you can get to another in half an hour at most! You should not waste your nerves searching for a parking lot, trying to disperse where it is impossible in principle. Leave your car in the parking lot at your home or hotel and take a walk.

Trebinje - holidays with children

In my opinion, Trebinje is a wonderful city for families. In summer, you can take your children to the outdoor pool (where, by the way, there is a swimming area for adults and a separate one for kids). You can walk with them all day, sometimes stopping at a cafe to eat some delicious dessert with ice cream. There are few children's playgrounds in the city, but you most likely will not need them. Everything is compact and convenient here, so if your children suddenly start acting up, you can always return to the hotel and relax there. In restaurants, you will also never be denied the preparation of any simple food for your child, but you still should not ask for the children's menu - it is nowhere to be found.
