Canal Saint-Martin was drained in Paris

The famous canal of Paris Saint-Martin was dug back in 1822 - 1826 and has a length of 4.5 kilometers. During the time of Napoleon III, almost half of the canal was hidden underground, because the government decided to create boulevards in this place. In the 60s of the 20th century, Saint-Martin wanted to replace it with a freeway and had already begun to develop a project, but the townspeople came up with serious discontent, so they abandoned the idea.

Now the famous canal is used as a tourist attraction and a great place for walking. The channel is periodically cleaned by pumping water out of it. The last time this was done 15 years ago. And then came the day when the authorities decided that the procedure should be repeated.

As a result of work at the bottom of the channel, simply amazing findings were discovered. These are old radios, and bicycles, and scooters, and shopping carts, and even motorbikes.

Saint-Martin is located in the very center of Paris, on one of the most prestigious streets. There are always many tourists and ordinary vacationers. According to some of the Parisians, perhaps just because of popularity this place has turned into such a dump.

It took workers three months to completely drain the canal.

The last time it was cleaned in 2001.

It should be noted that it is not cheap. Draining and cleaning the canal cost 9.5 million euros.

Workers catch the fish left at the bottom, place it in a container and transport it to a cleaner place.

Over three days, about 4.5 tons of bream, trout and carp were caught and transported.
