Wonderful shots depicting Kyoto's street scenes in 1974

Kyoto is the capital of the prefecture of the same name in Japan. The city located on the island of Honshu is considered part of the metropolitan area of Keihanshin along with Osaka and Kobe.

During the Second World War, this beautiful Japanese city miraculously avoided large-scale destruction, as a result of which the pre-war cultural heritage of Kyoto has survived to the present day.

At the same time, Kyoto is called the center of culture and art of Japan and the main tourist destination in the country. There are numerous Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, magnificent palaces and picturesque gardens. Among the destinations most sought after by travelers are the Emperor’s Palace, Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji and Emperor Katsura’s Villa.

Kyoto is also one of the main destinations for those who want to graduate in Japan. Here is the University of Kyoto - a world-famous higher education institution.

The black and white shots we want to show you today were taken by Jussi Salmiakkinen in October 1974. They demonstrate the street life of this delightful Japanese city.
