Hegra: the ancient Nabataean city carved into the rocks in the middle of the desert

Many people know the city of Petra, with its magnificent temples and palaces carved directly in the rocks. But besides this greatest monument of ancient architecture, the Nabataeans have created another unique masterpiece. This is the ancient city of Hegra, which today is located in Saudi Arabia. Here you can also see the unique technique of the ancient people, who managed to create a delightful complex in the middle of the desert.

Most of the monuments of ancient architecture located here belong to the 1st century AD. On the territory of ancient Hegra there are more than 100 rock burials and buildings, which are also carved into the rocks and used as living quarters. This city was a major shopping center, where there were trade caravans from many parts of the ancient world. Therefore, in the preserved rock buildings, one can trace the influence of the architectural styles of Phenicia, Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece.

Today, Hegra, along with Petra, is one of the best-preserved cities in the Nabatean kingdom. Archaeological research is carried out here, and the ancient city itself is often visited by tourists. Skilful facades adorning blocks of red sandstone make an indelible impression. Strolling under the scorching Arabian sun, tourists can touch the ancient world of Nabataeans, for whom this harsh area was their home.
