In ancient Egypt, when excavating the remains of one of the pharaohs, scientists found mummies of the court next to him. From a nearby manuscript it became known that they were "keepers of the nails of the pharaoh." That is, in another way - the ancient Egyptian manicure masters. And about Cleopatra it is known that she painted henna with her nails.

In ancient China, wisdom was not determined by the length of nails. And all the Chinese people made sure that the emperor had everything in order with his hands.

The soul of our people is mysterious and unpredictable. Hence the relation to the nails. It was necessary to cut them strictly on Thursdays. No Fridays, Saturdays or Mondays. If you cut your nails the other day - expect illness and misfortune. After the nails were trimmed, they had to be burned immediately, then go out into the field and dispel the ashes in the wind with sentences. However, it was worth doing this if everyone in the house was healthy. If there is a patient, then you need to go up to him and say, "sickness, trouble, don't knock me," sprinkle ashes on a sore spot. He’ll take off with his hand. And if you do this: cut off the nails of a sick person, burn them and bury the ashes in the ground at the intersection of highways, then the whole family will be healthy.

Shepherds were not allowed to cut their nails at all. It was believed that they entered into an agreement with the devil - forest spirit. According to this unspoken document, they had no right to kill animals, slaughter their own cattle and cut their nails. There was all the strength in the nails! The longer the nails, the stronger the contract.

And there was such a sign: if you spit on the nail three times, cut it off, and then divide it into three parts, then you can get rid of damage and the evil eye.
In the 19th century, Russia did not lag behind the development of manicure art. If you pay attention to the hands of the beautiful princess Zinaida Yusupova, you will notice how her fingernail shines.

Remember the poem by Nikolai Gumilyov "Pompey at the Pirates"?

Most likely, they did not sprinkle with ruby, but painted with a special cream and powder. Moreover, before this, the nail was softened with a special cologne, the mixture was applied with a brush made of camel hair, polished with vigorous movements, then it was again wetted and the procedure was repeated.
Powders were made from talc and zinc oxide.
