From Damascus to the cave where Jesus was born: 10 endangered UNESCO sites

Today, the UNESCO World Heritage List contains more than a thousand objects. All of them have special cultural significance and are very valuable for the historical heritage of mankind. However, some of them are at risk, today it is 54 attractions scattered across different corners of the planet. The threats are completely different: from natural disasters to military conflicts. A complete list can be found here, but here are some of them.

Indonesia: Sumatra rainforests where deforestation and roads are being built.

Iraq: the ancient city of Al-Hadr, which is now trying to restore.

Kenya: Lake Rudolph and the national parks near it suffer from severe drought and climate change.

USA: Everglades National Park - a piece of absolutely wild wildlife threatened by agricultural activities.

Palestine, Bethlehem: The Basilica of the Nativity is endangered due to pollution and requires reconstruction. This is one of the oldest churches on the planet, it stands directly above the cave where Jesus was born.

Republic of Kosovo: The Pechersk Patriarchal Monastery near the town of Pecs, founded in the 13th century, is a monument from the Middle Ages that has no legislative protection and is not properly monitored.

Austria, Vienna: the historical center, which they periodically want to build up, and get part of the territories into ownership.

Syria: The oldest city on the planet Damascus is in danger due to war.

Republic of the Congo: Virunga National Park, where gorillas live, has been on the list for a quarter of a century.

Madagascar: Acinanan rainforests threatened by logging.
