Heartbreaking photos of ballet dancers in Puerto Rico's ruined hurricane

For the photographer Omar Z. Robles, who became famous for his photo project with dancers, the long-awaited trip to his homeland in Puerto Rico turned into a sobering reminder of the troubles and difficulties of life on the island. Eight years ago, a Puerto Rican left to live and work in New York. A recent visit was too difficult for Robles to grasp. What the photographer saw in his native country broke his heart.

His goal was not to embellish the lands beloved from childhood. He completely subordinated the work of the tragic reality of Puerto Rico, acting as a visual artist. As before, the heroes of the shooting are local ballet dancers, but the context is already completely different. The theme is dictated by the hurricane Maria that raged a year and a half ago in Puerto Rico. The element was so ruthless that it destroyed the island almost to the ground. In the new project, Robles wanted to take a most meaningful look at today's reality of these once paradise places. Each frame of this series is permeated with a heart-squeezing feeling of loss and sadness.
