Everyone saw the usual rainbow: billions of tiny droplets of water, lit by the sun, form an amazing sight. But did you know that a rainbow can be seen not only on a sunny day after rain, but also at night? It turns out that there is a lunar rainbow, the process of formation of which is largely similar to the sun, but in its beauty, it is an incomparable natural phenomenon.

The lunar rainbow occurs when the weather is clear during the full moon or in the phase of the moon closest to the full moon, when the brightness of our satellite is maximum. After a short rain or near waterfalls, the same ideal conditions for a rainbow arise as in the daytime in sunlight. The smallest droplets of water reflect and refract the moonlight, and then a rainbow appears, which looks like an arc of a circle. But the lunar rainbow, in contrast to the solar one, has a lower brightness, and if the solar rainbow looks like a multi-colored arc, consisting of seven colors of the spectrum, then the lunar rainbow is most often perceived by the human eye as a monochrome light arc. This is due to the fact that its light is weaker than the sun and in poor lighting conditions, our eyes, or rather cones that provide color perception, are not able to distinguish the shades of the spectrum. But this is easy to fix with the help of photographic equipment, which, with the right settings, is able to catch the unique beauty of the night moon rainbow.
