Berlin golden hat: ancient calendar or headdress of a wizard of the Bronze Age

Among all the exhibits of the Museum of the prehistoric period and early history in Berlin, this ancient artifact is perhaps the most mysterious. It is completely unclear where he was found, his exact destination has not been fully established, there are only a few basic versions, and the very circumstances of his appearance in the museum are shrouded in mystery.

The Berlin Golden Hat is a 75-centimeter cone-shaped object, with brim like a hat, covered in gold. On the fields of the hat and on the cone there is an ornament in the form of circles, rings and dots. Scientists attribute this artifact to the Urnopol culture of the Bronze Age. It is curious that 3 more similar hats were found, and all of them date from the period 1400 - 800 years. BC.

But if the rest of the hats were discovered in the south of Germany and in France, then nothing is known about the origin of the Berlin golden hat. There are no accompanying documents indicating where it was found or bought, which most likely indicates that the hat was purchased on the black market of ancient values. Be that as it may, this exhibit is of particular value and is exhibited in a separate hall of the Museum of the prehistoric period and early history.

Initially, it was assumed that these hats were used in religious events. But then scientists suggested that this could be a kind of ancient calendar, and the figures on the hat indicated dates from the solar and lunar cycles, which were important for conducting field work. The hats most likely belonged to people who played an important role in society, perhaps these were people who performed ritual rites.

The remaining 3 hats also have a similar ornament and most likely performed a similar function. But why did the ancient inhabitants of Europe need to put an astronomical calendar on a golden hat, when it was possible to fix these data in a much simpler way, scientists have not yet been able to find out.
