The dinosaur valley in Mongolia again pleased scientists with a magnificent find

Mongolia again pleased paleontologists and all dinosaur lovers: the remains of a sauropod were discovered in this country, and the degree of its preservation is simply excellent. In Mongolia, there is a wonderful place called Bayanzag, which in the scientific community has received the title of dinosaur valley.

Bayanzag is a mountainous area in the Gobi Desert, located in the aimak Umnegov, in the south of the country. It was here that numerous dinosaur remains were found, parts of the skeleton and petrified eggs, whose age is from 65 to 80 million years. In Bayanzag, the remains of Velociraptors, five species of sauropods, Pinacosaurs, Tarbosaurs, Alioramus, Protoceratops, and many others were discovered.

Different types of sauropod, reconstruction

For the first time, the world learned about Bayanzag as a grand repository of dinosaur remains in the 20s of the last century, when an American expedition discovered the first specimens of the remains. Later, in 1946, a Soviet paleontological expedition worked in this area of the Gobi Desert, which also contributed to the study of this unique place.

Bayanzag is widely known outside of Mongolia and, along with South American Patagonia and Tendagur in Africa, belongs to the unique burial places of ancient reptiles. It regularly organizes research expeditions with the participation of Mongolian and foreign experts. In the era of the mass extinction of dinosaurs, their remains were buried under the thickness of sedimentary rocks, and as a result of many years of water and wind erosion, they were at a shallow depth and became accessible to researchers.

The territory where the dinosaur cemetery is located is partly included in the Gurvansayhan national park, which is often visited by tourists traveling in Mongolia.

Zauropods, reconstruction of appearance

A recent find is among the outstanding discoveries, since well-preserved parts of the skeleton of such a large sauropod, a herbivorous dinosaur, were first found on the territory of Mongolia. Zauropods are among the largest species of dinosaurs that once inhabited Eurasia. This is an extensive group of herbivorous dinosaurs from the order of lizards, which were widespread during the Jurassic period.
