London residents advised to prepare for a strong earthquake

Great Britain does not belong to the regions that are mentioned in the list of the most seismically dangerous places on our planet. Nevertheless, recently published research results suggest that the authorities of the British capital should develop a plan for a strong earthquake, as this sad event could happen in London in the very near future.

As scientists from Imperial College managed to find out, under the territory of London there are two faults of the earth's crust, which increase by 1-2 millimeters annually. Faults lie beneath the southeastern and central parts of the city, and their presence and exact location have long been difficult to determine due to thick clay deposits.

Seismologists believe that even an earthquake of 5 points can lead to serious damage in the city, and emphasize that its probability is more than 50%. At the same time, it is noted that minor earthquakes, which are recorded only by instruments, have recently been regularly observed in England. In this regard, scientists recommended working out a set of measures to protect citizens, as well as buildings and structures of the British capital, which could be affected by tremors.

Despite the apparent calm, the island of Great Britain is affected by modern tectonic processes, as evidenced by including constantly recorded minor earthquakes. In general, the UK is raising the territory, with the exception of the south-eastern part of the island. This region is subject to lowering processes, and multidirectional tectonic movements can lead to serious consequences sooner or later.
