Salzburg

For me, as for many other tourists, Salzburg was the first place when I met Austria. If you have been to the country of Mozart and did not look into the city in which he was born, then you lost a lot. I am sure this needs to be fixed urgently.

Arriving in Salzburg, I involuntarily found myself in the center of how the city lived two hundred and three hundred years ago. Each street is a trace of the past, firmly frozen in the walls of the structures that have stood the time.

In the 4th largest city in Austria, it is relatively not as crowded as in Vienna, but nevertheless, the flow of visitors increases every year. I was fascinated by the Old Town and for a long time I could not part with it. Seen from almost anywhere in the city of Hohensalzburg is far from the only thing worth seeing. By the way, Hohensalzburg means "high fortress of Salzburg." Mirabell's palace and gardens deserve no less attention, but also the Salzburg Cathedral, the Mozart Museum and House, and much more. All this and not only will become an indispensable incentive to pack your bags and prepare yourself for the journey. Personally, all these places motivated me to get acquainted with Salzburg.

When I walked around the city, I immediately noticed that it has many religious buildings. I am not at all surprised that in every guidebook Salzburg is called "German Rome." Therefore, if you have already been to Rome or are still planning, a trip to Salzburg will become mandatory on your travel list.

Short video about Salzburg

How to get there

Salzburg is a small city, but large for Austria, so I did not have any problems with how and where to get. Airplanes from Moscow fly here.

If you arrived in Vienna, then you can also get from there to the city by plane, although, in my opinion, this is an extremely unprofitable investment on your part. The distance from Vienna to Salzburg is just over 300 km. It is better to spend time on a train that takes you to your place in just 2.5 hours. By the way, you will spend as much time on the plane, and you will pay at times more.

If you decide to get to Salzburg by bus, then the road will take you a good 5 hours. But during this time you will admire the stunning scenery that Austria gives.

It all depends on you: a bus ticket is not much cheaper than what you buy on the train. If you don’t want to simply waste time that is expensive for you, then, in my opinion, it is better to give preference to rail connections.

By plane

Salzburg International Airport, named after Mozart (Innsbrucker Bundesstraße 95, tel. + 43 662 8580 7911) is located just 20 minutes by car from the historic center.

The city can be reached by trolley buses and buses, which is convenient for tourists who prefer public taxi transport, using which you will definitely overpay. Over the road will have to pay about 20-25 euros.

By the way, Mozart Airport is Austria's largest regional airport. Pay special attention that the main time of congestion is the ski season.

If you fly from Moscow, then the travel time will be a little more than 3 hours, but do not flatter yourself. Most of the flights do not have direct flights to Salzburg, so you will have to fly one way or another with transfers that can last for 5 or 10 hours. Try to choose the best option for yourself.

I preferred the ideal way: by plane to Vienna, and from there by train to Salzburg. The flight cost me 18 thousand round-trip.

If you immediately fly to Salzburg, you risk spending at least 25 thousand in both directions. Plus, long transplants are very tiring.

You can find the best flight option in this section Trevelask.

At the exit from the airport you will see trolleybus number 2, which will race off with you straight to the central railway station. Each waiting interval is 10-15 minutes. You can also take bus number 27, it only leaves every 20 minutes, but goes to the railway station. True, you will spend about 40 minutes on the road. But bus number 10 takes you to the place in just 15 minutes, and the intervals are quite short - 10 minutes.

Ticket prices for both bus and trolleybus are identical: 2.3 €. For children under 15 years - 1.2 €. You can buy a ticket at the "Newscorner" kiosk, directly at the bus stop or at the driver.

By train

Salzburg's Hauptbahnhof train station is located in the New Town.

If you are going to Salzburg from Munich, then spend quite a bit of time - about an hour and a half (about two hours on a local train). You can come to the city of Mozart from a very large number of neighboring regions: international trains depart from Zurich, Zagreb, Ljubljana and Budapest.

The most relevant is the railway connection with Vienna. I gave preference to the most profitable service 'WESTbahn', which has been operating since 2011.

Trains of this company go from Vienna to Salzburg via Linz. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours. The difference in pricing between OBB and Westbahn is palpable.

Westbahn charges passengers only 25.50 euros per person, and a ticket paid through OBB will cost you 66-70 euros in the second class. Based on experience, I can say that Westbahn provides excellent double-decker trains that have all the amenities needed during a trip. You will not feel infringed, so decide for yourself: pay 100 euros for first grade or 25.50 for conditions that are second only to a number of additional features.

Trains from Vienna depart from Westbahn Wien Station (Europaplatz 2, 1150) 2-3 times every hour. Trams 6 and 18 and the metro (Westbahnhof station) line U6 and U3 run to the station itself.

By bus

Fortunately or unfortunately, buses from Vienna to Salzburg are not so popular among locals and tourists. The main vehicle is still the train.

If you still decide to take the bus, keep in mind that a ticket will cost you a little cheaper than the Westbahn train, and there is almost no regular service due to the lack of a large number of people who want to.

It is possible to take bus 959, which leaves three times a week on even days. Travel time is almost 5 hours, and the fare is from 15 to 26 euros. The bus leaves from Vienna Erdberg (Vienna International Bus Station, located at Erdbergstrasse 200A) and arrives at Salzburg Central Station.

If your first travel destination is German Munich, then there will be no questions with a bus service. Travel time, depending on the chosen company, will be 1.5-2 hours. The communication between the cities is well established, a network of regular transport. Coach Bus buses will be delivered for 24-35 euros, and the MeinFernBusFlixBus carrier for only 7-12 euros, despite the fact that he will arrive in Salzburg with a difference of only 15-20 minutes.

On the official websites of the carriers Bahn, FLIXBUS, Jelinak, you can follow the schedule, select the desired day and book a ticket.

Keep in mind that, for example, the first company provides the opportunity to travel to Salzburg up to 5 times a day, and the third - only twice in a week.

By car

If you suddenly decide to go from Vienna to Salzburg by car, then remember that the distance that you have to cover is 300 km, and the travel time is 3 hours. Based on the most profitable route, follow this direction:

  • Take B1 toward A1.
  • Take the A1 towards Münchner Bundesstraße / B155 (Salzburg). From A1, take exit 292-Salzburg-Mitte.
  • Continue onto B155. Take the Rudolf-Biebl-Straße / B1, Aiglhofstraße and Neutorstraße towards Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz.

Given the amount of gasoline consumed on the road (approximately 90 liters) and its prices, you will have to invest about 100 euros one way on this trip.

From Salzburg you can get to Vienna via the A1 motorway and to Munich via the A8 motorway.

When is the season. When is the best time to go?

Salzburg - this is the case when you can visit the city in any of the 4 seasons and remain extremely satisfied. In winter, the Austrian region is a real paradise for lovers of skiing and snowboarding. In this regard, Salzburg is equipped very thoroughly. Nearby cities have everything you need for a quality sports vacation. Nowhere in Europe did I get so much pleasure from skiing, except in the vicinity of Salzburg. There are well-known ski resorts far beyond the borders of Austria, where tourists from all over the world fly. Check out the prices of tours to Salzburg here.

December-February are peak months when hotels in the region do not have time to free rooms for guests. In the city as a whole, the temperature is gentle: the thermometer rarely drops below -5 degrees.

In the spring and summer, many people visit Salzburg to attend various festivals. In addition to concerts, opera performances are held.

The temperature in the spring season is approximately 12-17 ° C (in the highlands this mark is lower), in summer the air warms up to 30-35 ° C. Salzburg attracts tourists during this period because after that you can safely go to small cities and settlements along the cleanest lakes.

Salzburg summer

In summer, Salzburg is really warm. The air temperature can reach up to 30 ° C. So feel free to go explore the city. If you are in it from July to August, then by all means visit the music festival Saizburger Festspiele. As far as I know, recently the festival has been held from Easter until the end of October. The price of a ticket for a particular concert depends on the place, therefore, it ranges from 25 to 250 euros per person. And by the way, Mozart’s works are invariably key events every year.

But do not worry: here you will hear the creations of other composers, as well as be able to attend opera performances.

There are really a lot of tourists at this time, but not like in the ski season. It rains, sometimes it can go on for several days in a row, but this is not so common compared to spring. If weather permits and there is a desire, go to neighboring cities. Many of them are resort, because they are located near the lakes.

The Austrians themselves often come here to rest, since all conditions are created. Lakes Wolfgangsee, Traunsee, Weissensee and Bodensee are a great reason to leave the city and go to enjoy the unimaginable mountain and water beauties.

Salzburg in the fall

Closer to October, the number of tourists decreases slightly. You do not have to walk along the busy streets, you can safely visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress without standing in a kilometer queue. Silence and calm are provided. Although in Hohensalzubberg itself you can get to some kind of concert. Events are organized here from the first day of Easter until the very end of October. And the whole of October are the Days of Culture. So feel free to join the popular movement. Keep in mind that the air temperature in late autumn averages 12-14 ° C. Stock up on warm clothes and do not forget to pack an umbrella in your suitcase. Rains during this period are not uncommon. I always went for a walk with an umbrella, because it is almost impossible to predict the weather.

Salzburg in the spring

In spring, Salzburg comes to life, giving visitors an incredible beauty. In the city itself at this time, against the background of the winter period, it is very few, but in April and especially in May the number of tourists really increases. Sightseeing buses are packed with people who want to get to know the city as soon as possible.

Spring is the time when more than one religious holiday is celebrated. Depending on the church calendar, the Easter festival and concerts in Hohensalzburg begin in the city. After Easter, depending on the date of its holding, the Holy Trinity Festival is held in 50 days.

You can safely travel to nearby cities, admire the same lakes as in the summer. True, you won’t be able to swim, but you can do it by sitting on the shore and observing the Austrian Alps.

Salzburg in winter

Winter ... It is winter that Salzburg turns into a real paradise for tourists, especially those who are eager to visit ski resorts, go down the alpine slopes, snowboard in one of the best locations of this kind not only in Europe but also in the world.

Of course, housing prices, food, souvenirs are rising. In late January, music lovers can stay on the Mozart Week. Otherwise, all monuments, museums, churches are also accessible for visitors. The temperature in the city is not lower than -5 ° C. Therefore, it is not worth wrapping up strongly, but flaunting in an autumn coat is not recommended.

What are the prices for vacation

The entire budget in Salzburg rests on your own interests and needs. If you want to save on housing, then give preference to hostels and apartments rented out by local. In this case, you spend an average of 35 euros per night. When it comes to hotels, especially those located in the historical center, the average bar - 70-90 euros will be a great success. Most often, the minimum threshold is set at around 100-120 euros.

Salzburg is not so large as to spend the last savings on luxury hotels. It’s better to settle a couple of kilometers from the center, but invest your money in the same trips to other cities.

Booking usually helps me to decide on a hotel, and you can see offers from different sites here.

You can look at offers for renting private apartments here.

The average price of a business lunch for two is 35-40 euros; in the evening hours, we are already talking about other amounts - 70-80 euros.

Want to save? Then visit the establishments of world famous fast food chains. Fortunately or unfortunately, they are in Salzburg. Their special congestion is observed in front of the railway station.

In Salzburg, a guided Hop-on-hop-off bus runs, on which you can do a city tour. You can go to any convenient of 12 stops, and then sit back.

The ticket is valid throughout the day. The price is 16 euros. In peak seasons (summer-winter), buses run every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. I advise you to contact the travel agencies offering their tours. I was extremely pleased because I did not have to torment myself with thoughts about the ideal route.

On Mirabell Square, near Kirche St. Andrew, Panorama Tours is located. You will be offered more than 10 directions in the city, not only. The easiest sightseeing route is 15 euros, and the most difficult (comprehensive) route is 95 euros per person. The company offers excursions to the Bavarian Mountains, to the Salt Mine, to the Ice Caves and the famous Werfen Fortress. On the official website you can familiarize yourself with everything in detail.

In the same place as Panorama Tours, there is Salzburg Sightseeing, where a whole set of destinations is also recommended for tourists, but the price of a sightseeing tour for the company is 18 euros, unlike the first company, the route is designed for 1.5 hours, not 1 hour . It also offers excursions outside the city.

The main attractions. What to watch

Top 5

Upon arrival in Salzburg, you must immediately determine what attractions deserve your attention. There are many of them in the city, but it’s worth looking at those without which your idea of this city seems inferior:

  • Hohensalzburg Fortress - the main place in the city. Hohensalzburg was built in 1077. By the way, an International Academy is being organized here, gathering artists from around the world under its wing. The price of the issue is 11 euros; 5.60 euros for children 6-14 years old; 5.10 euros for a group of children and adolescents (from 6 to 19 years old); 22.60 euros - a family ticket.

  • Mirabell Gardens rightfully bear the title of "pearl of Salzburg."When you get here, you are immersed in a completely different world, lost, forgotten somewhere in those times when the real rule of the Baroque, and in all architecture reigned sophistication and non-vulgar imperial luxury. From here it is especially interesting to watch the Hohensalzburg fortress.

Open for visits on the following days:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 8.00 to 16.00;
  • Tuesday and Friday - from 13.00 to 16.00;

Be sure to visit the Dwarf Garden and the Rose Garden. Inside you will see marble stairs (the work of Raphael Donner) and the most beautiful wedding hall in the world. If you want your wedding ceremony to be held here, you must order a day at least a year before the celebration. The ceremony is held in English only on Tuesdays and Fridays. In the garden of dwarfs - 28 funny figures, as well as the Baroque Museum (entrance - 5 euros). Not far from here is the labyrinth and theater, considered the oldest on this side of the Alps. If you have settled not so close to the park, then use buses No. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 25, 32, 120, 130, 131, 140, 141, 150, 152, 154, next to the Mirabellplatz stop

  • Mozart House and Museum should be perhaps the first place on your route. How can one come to the city where the composer was born, spend the best years of his life, and not go there? The whole of Salzburg lives in the past of this man, carefully preserving and honoring the legacy that he then left. Hurry up to come earlier than the main influx of groups of tourists (before 12:00) in order to carefully examine everything that was saved after the death of a musical genius. Open daily from 9.00 to 18.00 (visitors are allowed to enter until 17.30). Located at Mozarts Geburtshaus, Getreidegasse 9. Ticket price -10 euros.

  • Cathedral striking in its scale, strict style in design. In front of the church building on the squares Residentplatz and Domplatz, a large number of tourists gather, eager to get inside the sacred monastery. Having arisen in the VIII century, even today it remains one of the most recognizable architectural monuments in the world. Its height is 76 meters, and its capacity is up to 10 thousand people. The main pride is a Romanesque font made of bronze and an organ with 4000 pipes.

  • Getreidegasse - the main street of the city in its historical part. It is already a landmark in itself. Walk here for only 20 minutes and you will be amazed at the number of unusual signs over each store, appreciate the style and general trend in the construction of the street, absorb the whole spirit of Salzburg, as it has remained for many hundreds of years.

Churches and temples. Which are worth a visit

St. Peter's Church, cemetery and catacombs

The most notable are the small catacombs. Visit the chapels with a beautiful view. This place is not as popular as it might seem, so feel free to go explore it.

Cemetery opening hours:

  • from April to May - from 6:30 to 20:00;
  • from June to August - from 6:30 to 21:30;
  • in September until 19:00;
  • from October to March until 18:00;

This place attracts many people because it was the first Mass in B minor that came out of Mozart’s hands. Soon, the composer played his masterpiece in St. Peter's Church or conducted an orchestra. Incidentally, during the annual summer festival, Mass in B Minor is always performed and all at the same address - St.-Peter-Bezirk 1.

Working hours:

  • from April to October - from 8:00 to 21:00;
  • from November to March until 19:00;

Church of St. Sebastian

One of those temples erected in their time in the Baroque style. On the Linzer Gasse 41, in the first quarter of the 19th century, the church was destroyed due to a fire, but it was completely restored. For tourists, the chapel of St. Philip Neri, which is located on the road to the cemetery, will be attractive. Incidentally, the burial site itself is also a tourist attraction. The church is visible from almost anywhere in the city.

Franciscan Church

The building, made not only in the Baroque, but also in the Romanesque style. Wall paintings on a general muffled cladding background add a certain mystery that you want to plunge into. After the services, the church is accessible to tourists. During mass, organ music sounds here, which cannot but rejoice at the hearing of refined connoisseurs of beauty. You can get to know the place at Franziskanergasse 5, 5020 Salzburg, Osterreich.

Museums Which are worth a visit

Salzburg Museth (Salzburg Museum Mozartplatz 1) is relatively new. There you will get acquainted with the history of the city and learn interesting facts about it. In one of the halls, the exposition is dedicated to the most outstanding people of Salzburg, who made a special contribution to its development. Personally, I was attracted to the mirror room. There are collected artifacts of the Middle Ages, which, despite the time, have been preserved in decent condition.

The museum has several branches, one of them is the Museum of children's toys.

Schedule: from 9:00 to 17:00, Monday is a day off, but on Thursday it operates until 20:00. By the way, a ticket costs 7 euros, but cheaper on Sunday - 5.50 euros.

Do you want to go? Take buses No. 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 20, 25, 28, 160, 170 (stop Mozartsteg / Rudolfskai).

By the way, there is even an aquarium, which in its scale is recognized as the largest in Central Europe. If you manage to get to the scientific center, do not be too lazy to participate in experiments in the field of science. When do you still have a chance to feel like a physicist or chemist? Visit the hall dedicated to prehistoric animals. There are huge models of dinosaurs and other creatures that inhabited the planet.

From Salzburg to the House of Nature can be reached by bus number 1. Stop - MONCHSBERGAUFZUG.

Salzburg Museum of Modern Art (Museum der Moderne Salzburg) is located at Wiener Philharmonikergasse 9 and Mönchsberg 32. It is open for visits from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 to 18.00, on Mondays it is closed. The museum is located on a mountain cliff above the roofs of the Old Town. It hosts exhibitions of works of art of the XX and XXI centuries.

AT Gallery in the residence (Residence Gallery Salzburg; Residenzplatz 1) presents a modest but rather interesting collection of contemporary paintings, as well as Baroque painting. Feel free to go there if you do not want to spend a lot of time on viewing the exhibits.

Parks

When it comes to Salzburg, first of all tourists vied with each other about Mirabell Gardens or the national zoo. But in addition to popular institutions, such as those that I have already talked about, there are others that deserve no less attention.

Proyschenpark It is state owned and has been open for 14 years (since 2001). In fact, it is very popular among the local population, and is in special demand among a small audience. Here, parents will be able to entertain their children to the maximum: large playgrounds, many swings, carousels and other attractions for children. The adult park will also appeal to adults, if you want to have an active holiday and play football, basketball or table tennis. The Austrians themselves call the park "Salzburg playground."

To get to the place, from the Salzburg Rathaus stop, take the buses to Salzburg Joseph-Messner-Straße. Information can be checked with the driver. From the stop go just a couple of minutes.

If possible go to Eigenpark. Believe me, visiting this place will leave only positive impressions in your heart. By the way, it is located in the south-east of the city at the foot of Mount Gais. So you are guaranteed a beautiful landscape. Set off and enjoy the slopes, covered with forests, grottoes and beautiful waterfalls. It is better to keep the camera ready at once, because it is impossible not to capture such masterpieces of nature. In the park you will find pavilions in the usual Baroque style for the city, perfectly trimmed lawns, in general, all that Salzburg is beautiful. And the water in the springs was recognized as completely healing. Take the shuttle buses to the Old Town and stop at the Salzburg Finanzamt stop. From there already on foot, and you are there.

Folk gardenbut more often you can hear the name "Franz Josef Park", which is notable for its outdoor swimming pool, various facilities and places for games. Here you can take a break from the tourist rush, go boating, watch sports, and possibly take a direct part in them. By the way, the hockey team of Salzburg is based on a local equipped rink. In winter, the garden is not as attractive to tourists as at other times. Franz Josef Park is located east of Salzburg on the right bank of the Salzach River. You can find out how to get to the place at the box office at bus stops, as there is often confusion with the route numbers. So be careful.

Food. What to try

The average price of a business lunch for two ranges from 25 to 35 euros, dinner is more expensive - 40-50 euros. But if you do not want to spend so much money, then visit the pastry shops. There are more than enough of them in Salzburg. Try local cakes, sweets, and chocolate.

You can look into one of the bakeries where fresh produce is always served: an Austrian sandwich with a wide variety of fillings and other bakery products will quickly quench your appetite. Buy a ham bun and set off to explore Salzburg further. Still decided to look into one of the local cafes? Be sure to try the apple strudel with cottage cheese or zaher.

You will surely find an advertisement for the Salzburg Knocker. An egg white dish with sugar, baked in an oven, is far from a dietary dish, so measure your strength if you want to try dessert alone.

Do not deny yourself the pleasure to try the soup puree or the soup with pancakes, unusual for Russian cuisine, which are added to the broth with herbs. But personally, I really liked the cheese casserole and knodel in cheese-mushroom sauce.

Head to Alter Markt Square, where a fair takes place daily, which, in addition to souvenirs, presents local dishes. On the market you can buy trout, and dried sausage, and klenzetbrotom (confectionery bread with fruits) to treat. If you are not looking for gastronomic adventures on your stomach, there are places for you with European menus from other countries (Italy, Germany, France).

Find out the exact average cost of some products and prices in a cafe here.

Holidays

If you go to Salzburg in January, then at the end of the month you will get to Mozart’s Week. This event is associated with the composer's birthday, which falls on January 27. Easter is celebrated in the spring, after which a music festival is launched, which has recently been held until the very end of October. By the way, on the eve of all the Saints, various exhibitions of agricultural products and a culinary festival are organized, the symbol of which is a pumpkin. In the second half of August, festive events are also held in honor of the harvest.

In September (from 19 to 24) on the calendar of Salzburg - St. Rupert's Day. At this time, you can get to mass celebrations. A large carousel is installed on the Residentplatz, and people dress up in national costumes. The symbol of St. Rupert's Day is the clown (or clown). Go to the fair, which offers a wide selection of handicrafts. As you know, in parallel with all the events, the music festival gathers tourists from different countries in the city. Concerts are held in different parts of the city, the entrance to which varies from 25 to 250 euros per person. At the end of October, mass celebrations are held in honor of the Republic of Austria (October 26).

Security. What to watch out for

Given that the Old Town is characterized by narrow streets, a large concentration of tourists, it is not so difficult to remove anything from your bag or backpack. Therefore, keep everything to yourself and do not lose vigilance.

You may be in danger if you travel outside the city. Watch the weather. In winter, accidents do not rarely occur, which, unfortunately, take hundreds of lives. The mountainous area makes it necessary to move along the general routes during ascents and descents from the peaks. Avalanche descent is most often observed in places remote from public. And one more nuance: in the warm season in the mountains at an altitude of more than 1000 meters, there is a chance to pick up ticks, so dress so as to close the body.

Things to do

You need to understand that Salzburg is a city that is full of all kinds of entertainment. Many frankly pleased me, others became only part of any tourist destination. Be that as it may, you will find something to do here. Below I offer classes for every taste.

  1. Go to the casino at Wals-Siezenheim. It works every day except December 24th. The slot machine hall is open from 12.00 to 3.00; live board games from 15.00 to 3.00. The entrance is free.
  2. Play chess. The platform is located behind the cathedral, if you go from the side of the river. You will have to wait in line, but it's worth it.
  3. Ride and see Mount Untersberg. Travel time is negligible - 25-30 minutes. Bus number 25 leaves from the railway station or Mirabelplatz stop, which you will pass in any case, even if you start the journey from the station. Or take the routes nos. 35, 21 (stop Salzburg Lastenstraße). Upon arrival, you will be able to climb the funicular to a height of almost 2000 m. Consider the natural conditions, so that, being on top, you will be able to see all the beauty. It takes only 10 minutes to climb the funicular. Descent and ascent will cost 18 euros, which is much cheaper than what St. Gilgen offers. Only there, in small booths, no more than 4 people can fit, here - up to 50. After that, go on a tour of the ice cave of Shellneberg. Entrance ticket - 5 euros.

Tours

  • Salt mines. Perhaps several tours of the salt mines located in the vicinity of Salzburg. Interesting tours are conducted in the city of Bad Dürrnberg. At the ticket office of the station you can buy a Salz Erlebnis Ticket ticket, which includes an electric train, a bus to the mine, a visit to the mine and a tour of it. The tour lasts an hour and a half, children under 4 years old are prohibited from participating in the tour. You will be given overalls, and then lowered down to the mine. There is a cafe and picnic area, as well as a small reconstructed Celtic village with a playground. The tour will take about two and a half hours. Schedule of visits: April - October from 9.00 to 17.00; November - December from 10.00 to 15.00. Admission: 19 euros for adults, 9.50 euros for children. Family and group tickets are also available.
