Adelaide

Adelaide is one of the largest cities in beautiful Australia, which is worth a visit to see the leisurely pace of life, enjoy wine in the popular Barossa Valley, pet the lovely representatives of the fauna in Cleland Nature Reserve and just relax your soul.

If you travel around the southern state of the country, then this is its largest city, so not dropping into it would be a big omission. In Adele (forgive my simplification), old buildings are located next to graffiti, and quiet residential neighborhoods harmoniously combine with vibrant office life.

How to get there

Of course, the easiest way is by plane, but travel by other means of transport is also available from Melbourne (I’m talking about it because it is the closest of the major cities).

By plane

Almost all flights that fly to Australia stop in Adelaide, because from there they sometimes transfer you to intercity local airlines to fly to the same Sydney or Melbourne. (Hint: when transferring to Melbourne, remember that Adelaide has a difference of half an hour with him, so just in case, after questioning at the control, RUN to the check-in counter, otherwise you won’t even be able to spend the night at the airport, it only works until 23).

Flights to Adelaide are made by several airlines. You can read more about them and about approximate prices in an article about Perth, as well as in a review article about Oz. You can also search for options here.

Personally, I flew Qatar Airlines, which has excellent service, which allows you not to think about flying, but to sleep peacefully / watch movies / walk around the cabin / go about your business (underline as necessary). Of course, the prices are high, but this is one of those points that you probably took into account when choosing Australia as a destination country.

How to get from the airport

Adelaide Airport is the simplest and most understandable of all that I have seen. It is impossible to get lost in it.

Getting to the city is just as easy. You can do this in standard ways:

  • Taxi (or Uber). It’s more expensive than public transport, but you don’t have to bother with bus transfers and finding the right stop if the flight exhausted you to exhaustion and you arrived late in the evening.
  • Bus. There are a lot of routes to the center, you just need to check which one is closer to your place of residence.

By train

For fans to think about the eternal under the sound of wheels, this option is also available between Melbourne and Adelaide. Ride ~ 9 hours, ticket price - ~ 100 EUR (149 AUD).

By bus

You can also get there by bus, it will turn out a little less than the cost of gasoline, but then you will go by almost 13 hours. If it is possible to spend half a day on the road, while saving ~ 7-13 EUR (10-20 AUD), then go!

By car

Is it possible to get to the city from the more popular Melbourne by car, you ask? Sure. The distance is approximately 730 km, and it will take 8 hours (with an average gas consumption of ~ 8l / 100 km and a cost of ~ 0.83 EUR (1.25 AUD, Australian dollars) per liter, you will spend ~ 53.5 EUR (80 AUD) ; and this does not include the cost of renting the car itself). If you have an irresistible desire to go along the coast, then add another 300 km to the route. But the fact is that the landscapes along the road will not inspire you, since there are only small towns and desert fields. In addition, it is unlikely that you will be able to see a kangaroo every 50 km, since, as practice shows, you can notice the most popular inhabitants of the fauna Down Ander when you least expect it, so do not waste time, it is better to spend it in Adelaide, enjoying local attractions or goodies in the patisserie.

When is the season. When is the best time to go?

We are accustomed to perceiving Oz as one of the hottest countries, and this is an incomparably deserved title, but Adelaide is one of the few cities where the sizzling heat is not so often due to its lowest humidity in all of Australia. Therefore, there are mild winters and warm, dry summers.

Adelaide in the summer

For those who like it hotter, the period from December to February will be the most enjoyable, since the temperature reaches + 30 ° C (with rare exceptions there are notorious + 40 ° C), and rains are rare. Golden time to splash around the sea, try surfing to get a beautiful tan.

Adelaide in the fall

From March to May, the most picturesque season begins, as all the valleys surrounding Adele are covered with autumn flowers, and you can ride around the countryside while admiring nature.

Adelaide in the spring

From September to November, the temperature begins to decline, but the heat is still in the air. Be prepared for refreshing evenings, because the temperature drops very quickly by this time of day.

Adelaide in winter

To be honest, this is my favorite time of the year, on any continent. It will seem to many that + 16-18 ° C is cool enough, but if you just stock up on a pair of jackets, everything will be fine. Although it is believed that June is the rainy season, they do not go so often in Adelaide, with the exception of the valleys.

Areas. Where is better to live

The choice of place of residence depends only on your preferences, both in terms of the type of vacation, and in the desire to spend money on comfort or save money. In the city center, you can easily find various hostels, where prices range from 19 EUR to 36 EUR (28-54 AUD) per person per night, if it’s not important for you to share a shower with other guests, but you are ready to meet the same travelers , then this option is the most acceptable.

There is, of course, the opportunity to rent a room in the house, in the same center prices will be from ~ 47 EUR (70 AUD), but you can also find lower (even for ~ 25 EUR (37 AUD)), most importantly, see how many beds are available. As for me, this is the most convenient option, because you can find housing for any number of people, plus everything, you live in a house where there is a kitchen and a bathroom, and in general it is much more pleasant, because you feel as a guest, not as a tourist. Personally, I lived on the outskirts, so each time I had to stomp first to the bus stop, and then another 10-15 minutes to go, but saving on living allowed me to spend money on more interesting things, and it’s a very quiet and calm area (so to speak about any area away from the focus of activity) made it possible to rest, so that the next day again plunge into a day full of events, sounds and spectacles.

What are the prices for vacation

The fact that Australia is one of the most expensive countries is no secret. But if there is no way to save a lot of money so that you can walk on a grand scale on vacation, you can buy food at the cheapest (by their standards) Aldi supermarket and cook at home. Or see in advance in which bars / pubs / cafes there are special promotions and go taste the dishes at an affordable price.

The main attractions. What to watch

In this wonderful town you will find many interesting and attractive places, but, in my opinion, the 5 below are worth a look without fail!

Top 5

  • The first thing you should definitely go Cleland Nature Reserve. There are a huge number of the most popular representatives of the fauna of Australia. And there are hiking trails nearby. I’ll talk more about this place below.
  • Parliament of South Australia. This building is beautiful not only with its architectural delights, but also with the fact that it is behind it that you can see interesting sculptures of the "garden" and street art.

  • Botanical Garden. A chic place where you can not only take a walk in the greenhouse, but also see intricate sculptures and simply please the eye with a riot of green colors.

  • University of Adelaide. A huge territory where there are almost always crowds of students, buildings that amaze with their grandeur, and what's more, there is a park nearby where you can even make yourself a barbecue if you wish.

  • The beaches in Adelaide, of course, are enough, but Glenelg, in my opinion, the most optimal and enjoyable. Here you can swim, play volleyball, have a snack in various cafes, find amazing sculptures, and best of all, capture a charming sunset in your memory.

Churches and temples. Which are worth a visit

Adelaide is sometimes called the "City of Churches", so if you like to admire the exquisite decoration of the "temples of the Lord", then be sure to visit at least these 5 (and if possible, all) wonderful architectural structures that will delight your eye.

  • Church of the Holy Trinity (Holy Trinity Church). This is the oldest church in the state, located in the shade of Morfett Street Bridge. In ancient times, the clock on this tower was the only one in the whole city. Open from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 14:00.
  • Temple of saint Petra (St Peter's Cathedral). The two pointed towers of St. Peter's Temple in the northern part of the city are a recognizable part of the landscape. If you decide to visit this temple, you will not regret a single minute spent on a detailed examination of the interior. Opening hours: Monday - Saturday from 9:30 to 16:00, and on Sunday you can peek between the services, or 12:00 to 16:00.
  • Brougham Place Uniting Church This church, also known as "Light on the Hill", was built for freethinkers in this part of the city. It is called the United (or Unified), because it represents a new kind of "house of religion" based on the principles of autonomy and uniting the congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. But besides history, stained-glass windows are most impressive!

  • Church of St. Lorenz (St Laurence's Church). Approaching this church, you admire the grandeur of the building. It is the third oldest Catholic church in the entire state of South Australia. If you look inside, you can discover a wonderful view of the beam cover, which for a person with a rich imagination, perhaps, will resemble the deck of a ship :)

  • Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier (St Francis Xavier Cathedral). Entering this cathedral, you can not only hide from the scorching Australian sun, but also feel as if you crossed the threshold into another world, more calm and peaceful, in contrast to the din and fuss of the street. Francis Xavier was an outstanding personality. In his architectural masterpieces, he tried everywhere to display the number 7 so sacred for religion. That is why in this cathedral you will count 7 arches, 7 pairs of windows on each side and 7 exits.

Museums Which are worth a visit

If you have an irresistible craving for art, then in Adelaide you can visit a variety of art galleries, and museum of architecture, and Museum of Archeology. But the first on the list must certainly be Museum of Natural History. Here you will find a journey into the past of this wonderful country. Following the exhibits, you can imagine a complete picture of the life of Aboriginal people, plunge into their culture and life. Although the history of Oz is not as vast as any other country, it is very informative and surprising.

Admission is free :) And opening hours: from 10 am to 5 pm.

Parks

A little more about Cleland Nature Reserve. It can be reached in just 20 minutes from the city center (Stop 27 - Cleland Wildlife Park, which can be reached by 823 bus). If you like to wander through the forests, walk the paths and admire the nature, so to speak, from the inside, then there are great hiking trails, at the beginning of hiking there is even a small waterfall that already sets you up for unity with nature.

As for the reserve itself, to say that it is magnificent is to say nothing. Emotions begin to gush from the very entrance, when you see the first animal. The voice changes to a squeaky one, and in your speech inevitably “oooh” and “what a charm!” Appear.

Cleland is not some kind of zoo there, it is a huge wildlife park where animals, for the most part, walk freely in the wild. You can stroke them, take a picture, pick them up, take them home. There are no cells and aviaries. The most popular Oz animals - kangaroos, koalas and wallabies - walk in their sectors with absolutely no limits. Here, your playful hands will not be able to get unless the Tasmanian devil and dog dingoes, and then for security reasons.

The animals are very accustomed to communicating with people, so you can get acquainted with the Australian fauna here as closely as possible. By the way, you can buy food at the entrance, so as not only to reach for delicate creatures, but at the same time treat them to a delicious treat.

You will see the first inhabitants right away - potoru (sort of kangaroo rats; not in the sense that they are the size of a kangaroo, but simply move the same way on their long hind and short front legs, plus they have a bag on their belly).

Then, almost immediately, I rushed to the kangaroo, and here my joy not only knew no bounds - it was completely crazy, because I saw a huge field with a bunch of these magnificent animals. When you manage to stroke them, the endorphin level begins to go off scale. As well as the level of softness of the coat. Wallabies walk next to them.

You can not just see the koal here, but also stroke this endless softness of a lover of eucalyptus, your finger is really buried in wool by about a third. For a fee, you can even pick up these bears and take pictures.

Tourist streets

The most popular tourist street is Rundle Maul. Here you will find a lot of cafes, bars, people, shops and everything else you want. Here, as well as on the Arbat, one can also hear music published on various instruments by a completely motley contingent.

What to see in 1 day

How to manage to see everything in 24 hours or how to choose the best to fit in a day? To answer this question, check out the small, but very packed Adelaide program.

  • 7:40 - Breaststroke with dolphins. And how much would not? Head to Glenelg Beach at Temptation Sailing. Look at these wonderful animals nearby. The organizers of the tour promise to return the money if suddenly there is not a single dolphin in your way (which has never happened in the last 15 years). At 11:15 you will be back. 12:20 - A shopping session. It's time for store therapy at the very Randle Mall. And take a look and look at the passage, and even listen to the performance of street groups. 14:00 - Local snack. It's time to dine in the central market. Adelaide Central Market, which is the epicenter of the food culture of South Australia. It is a vibrant, vibrant place, packed with various cafes, cheese shops, bakeries, fruit and vegetable stalls, meat, and seafood. Here, local producers sell everything from olive oil to old-fashioned candies to home-made gin.
  • 15:20 - Cultural attack. It is necessary to saturate not only the body, but also the soul, so after the market we immediately go to the art gallery (Art Gallery of South Australia), located on the North Terrace. Here is one of the best collections in the country. You can enjoy the art of a cup of coffee.

  • 17:00 - "Oval" tour. Not far from the gallery is the Adelaide stadium famous for its shape and recognizable appearance. Here you can either climb onto the roof and enjoy the view (the last tour is just at 17:00), or take the tour “offstage” (the last tour is at 14:00, so calculate the time in advance and adjust the route), i.e. look at the "backstage" life of the players. It is not necessary to be a fan of cricket to experience the exciting atmosphere before the match or to imagine how athletes cheer on each other while waiting for the game.

  • 19:30 - Dinner is served! Once you are full of impressions, you should walk to Africola Restaurant - an African restaurant, whose dishes vary depending on the season.Eat juicy meat, drink a strong drink and soak up the colorful interior.

If you still have the strength, then go try the nightlife of the city. In the end, you didn’t come here to sleep;)

What to see in the surroundings

Of course, the most popular and alluring places in the vicinity of the city are the wine valleys of Barros and Maclaren, as well as Mount Lofti.

Barossa is one of the most popular grape valleys in the world, and there is breathtaking! Located just 70km from Adelaide. You can get there either by car or by buses 492А and 492С.

You can order various tours: by car, and by bicycle, and even in a balloon! Although the latter will cost as much as 200 EUR (300 AUD).

Concerning Mclaren Valley, you can also get here by bus 715, running from the station, by train (travel time: 45 minutes, and it leaves every 25 minutes), or by bicycle :)

Want a more extreme endurance tour? Then go to conquer Loft! Although "to conquer" - it is said loudly. After all, it is only 727 meters :) But is it really not worth rising for such a sunset ?!

Hint: Routes to neighboring cities Adelaide - Glenunga 4 km Adelaide - Findon 6 km Adelaide - Belhanna 21 km Adelaide, South Australia - Handorf, South Australia 22 km Adelaide - Lobetal 25 km

Nearby islands

Kangaroo island

You can get there either by car or by bus with a guide or by ferry (a ticket for 1 person will cost 33 EUR (49 AUD)). If you have the opportunity and time to get to this island, go without hesitation! The nature of this place and the beast (from fur seals to pelicans) will practically provide you with an explosion of your head (sorry for such vernacular, but, believe me, except for such bright, but intelligible phrases, you also cannot express in any other way, except for interjections of admiration).

Food. What to try

For fun, I advise you to go to any fast food, where in the menu you will see the treasured letters AB. This is a dish that Australians eat after a fun night spent in a drunken stupor. Usually everyone goes to McDonald's or looks for shawarma, and they have something to eat under this mysterious name. He looks not very aesthetic, but like any food seasoned with mayonnaise and ketchup, he has a great taste. Absorbing this junk food, the little fat-burner inside you weeps with happiness, and you - with shame. Of course, I asked how this intriguing abbreviation is deciphered, and thanks to my friend that he answered this question after I ate. The fact is that AB is translated as "ABortion" or "AfterBirth" (abortion; placenta), so, as you know, I did a huge favor without interrupting the meal. The full name of the dish, of course, you will not meet anywhere, but everyone knows about it, and in the menu it will be written that way. In fact, it's just french fries, meat - and all this is generously filled with sauces.

Recommended Places

I want to advise you 2 places that you should definitely go to if you like to eat deliciously.

  • Zambrero. Mexican cuisine cafe where you can choose which burrito to make. In addition to the pulp of an avocado with spices, it was my first Mexican meal. Very funny: on the one hand, guacomole, which can make almost any dish delicious; on the other - hot sauce, which is not even muffled by rice, so a fire-breathing animal awakens in you, and besides, tears roll down your cheeks from a riot of taste. Inexorably beautiful. Must try!
  • O'Connell St 24hr bakery. This is the most popular pastry shop in the city, where an unrealistically wide selection of all kinds of goodies is presented. Cakes for every whim. I tried the famous lamington and some kind of bomb with salty caramel, which could not enthusiastically blow up my taste universe. One of the finger-licking treats is custard tart. The main thing is that you, like me, are not wise with a recipe, otherwise it will not be insanely delicious, but insanely egg-like. In any case, it's worth a try. And even more than once.

Budgetary

  • A place with a very unusual name Delhi's Flying Fig (The Flying Fig Deli) will offer you the most delicious Israeli breakfasts (since the institution is open only until lunch) with fragrant bagels, scrambled eggs, sardines, feta cheese and other dishes. Price from 4.30 to 11.65 euros (AUD 6.50 - 17.50). In addition, the portions are so large that you can order one for two;) Address: 161 Jeffcott Street.
  • Burger lovers will be pleased with the place Burger theory, with a price range of 6 to 8 euros (AUD 9 - 12). Address: 8-10 Union Street.
  • Adelaide Central Market (Lucia's), where you can, together with local, taste dishes for every taste, as well as overstock fresh food. Address: Stall 1, Adelaide Central Market, Grote Street.

  • Ozzy is Thai food lovers, so you can try authentic food in "Star of Siam" (Star of Siam) Address: 67 Gouger Street.

  • But if you’re fortunate enough to be in Adelaide on Wednesday, then run to The curious squire, because there is an action on that day: a chicken wing of only 0.33 euros apiece! And believe me, stopping their absorption is very difficult. Address: 10 O'Connell Street

Security. What to watch out for

Adelaide is a calm and fairly safe city, but nevertheless, for your own peace of mind, you should follow simple rules:

  • Parks are poorly lit in the dark, therefore it is better to bypass them. Moreover, robbers and people intoxicated can be there.
  • If you are traveling by car, do not forget to lock it with a key.
  • Theft is rare, but it does happen, so watch your valuables.
  • It is better to avoid walking along the outskirts of the city at night (Salisbury and Elizabeth districts 20 km from the city center; and the suburbs of Hackham and Noarlung 25 km), since there is a greater risk of committing a crime.

Things to do

In addition to the standard attractions described above, you can also arrange a flight of your imagination and have a break in full:

  • By visiting the casino (The adelaide casino) and having tested your luck. At the same time, you can appreciate the elegant interior.
  • Going to a cricket match at a sports arena Adelaide oval. Or, if you are not a sports fan, go up there on the roof.
  • Having booked an all-day tour of the Adelaide hills and valleys. Yes, that doesn't sound so intriguing. And if I say that this is not just a tour on a boring bus, but driving one of the supercars? Already more interesting? Prancing horse will provide an opportunity to "saddle" one of its "stallions", including Ferrari, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Lamborghini and even Maserati. You will not only feel all the horsepower under the hood, but also enjoy the breathtaking views, taste a variety of delicacies and moreover, the entire route will be captured as a keepsake. yes you just look at these photos! Just want to book this trip, able to bring you to the peak of vivid emotions :)

Shopping and shops

The first place in the list of "Where to go shopping," certainly takes the aforementioned Rand Mol. This is a pedestrian street with more than 800 shops and boutiques. One of the most popular meeting places.

You can also go to the shopping center Tea Tree Plaza, it is easy to get there from the city center and it is easy to notice from afar by the outstanding antenna and the pyramidal structure that holds it.

The largest shopping center in Adelaide is Westfield Marion (Westfield Marion Shopping Center), where there are 400 boutiques.

Bars Where to go

  • Clever Little Tailor (19 Peel St.). A cozy bar in a quiet place with a wide selection of wines and liquors.
  • Udaberri (11 Leigh St.). A two-level bar that is packed full of youth on weekends to set the tone for fashion. You can taste good beer, great cocktails and a little snack.
  • First (128 Rundle Mall). The only nightlife on Rand Mall. Initially, it was a calm bar where you could sit while sipping cocktails, but soon became one of the popular places to go on Friday after work.
  • Supermild (182 Hindley St.). The facility is located in the basement. It is a dimly lit cocktail bar with a back patio where you can enjoy a beer. Most often, electronics plays.
  • Rock bar (142 Hindley St.). An inconspicuous place outside opens its door, or rather, the roof, for lovers of indie music. Open only on weekends, but until the morning.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

If you do not have time to buy souvenirs in other cities, then do not worry, standard souvenirs from Australia can be purchased here. More information about what to bring authentic to friends and relatives is worth reading here.

How to get around the city

As for transport, the situation here is nothing new, except for the lack of a subway. Uber is as popular as ours, but it’s a taxi anyway, and in any case it will cost you more than a bus or, better yet, your legs that can take you anywhere in the city, and along the way still reward with a viewing of everything that catches your eye: from buildings to the local population.

Taxi. What features exist

Prices for Uber:

  • Filing: EUR 1.48 (A $ 2.20 - Australian dollars)
  • By time: EUR 0.27 (A $ 0.40)
  • By mileage: EUR 0.67 (A $ 1)
  • Cancellation Fee: EUR 6.71 (A $ 10)
  • Booking Fee: EUR 0.37 (A $ 0.55)
  • Minimum: EUR 4.70 (A $ 7)

Using the services of this agency will cost you less than any others. Even locals use Uber. A trip from the airport to the city center will cost ~ EUR 18 - 22

Buses

This is the most convenient way to get around the city. In addition, a special ticket is provided for tourists, which offers unlimited travel on all types of public transport for 3 days, and it costs only EUR 17.85 (AUD 26.6). Upon expiration, you can simply replenish the card in cash. You can buy this ticket (Visitor Pass Pack) both at the airport and at some kiosks in the city.

In addition, you can purchase either a 1-day pass (unlimited travel throughout the day on all modes of transport, but the validity period, regardless of what time you bought it, expires at 4:30) for EUR 6.85 (A $ 10.20); or buy a ticket for each trip (during rush hours - before 9:01 and after 15:00, on Saturdays - for EUR 2.43 (A $ 3.62); on other days and times - for EUR 1.34 (A $ 1.99)).

Vehicle rental

The best, though not the cheapest, means of transportation will be a car. There are no problems with renting. You can reserve a car, after selecting it according to the necessary parameters, on the rentalcar.com website. The only thing - be prepared to give back for gas then about the same as for renting an iron horse.

Tips for motorists

It is worth remembering only two nuances of driving in Australia: there is left-hand traffic and it is worth driving according to the rules, since fines will fly you a pretty penny :)

Here are some of them:

  • For speeding less than 10 km - 127 EUR (190 AUD);
  • For speeding 23 km - 223 EUR (333 AUD);
  • Parking in the wrong place - 47 EUR (70 AUD).

Adelaide - Holidays with children

For children there is entertainment almost everywhere. Going to the beach? There are playgrounds and water parks. Want to find a tour specifically for your child? Then go on to the chocolate factory or ride horses, or bicycles. In any place, in any hotel, children are always welcome. You can safely enjoy the journey with your children.
